Heya people! With Biology out of the way, its time to celebrate! Woo hoo! Today sure had lots of fun... Schedule fully packed from after Biology all the way to 7 pm! Went to Crystal Jade at Taka to celebrate the belated Bdaes of Kezia and Pin Yun, then went to shop (erpz) and end the day with a movie! War of the worlds... a film that is undoubtedly what i expected... Lots of explosions and actions, masterful artistry from Steven Spielberg and poor plot due to the nature of the novel itself... wonder how did the novel become a classic though...
After dawdling around in HC for a while, receiving more biological torture (mitosis tutorial and meiosis lecture notes >_<), we (Me, abel, dearest uncle, mong, david, nana, yvonne, ikuyo, yan ling, clara, xin hui, and of course kezia and pinyun) headed out to Takashimaya to have lunch at Crystal Jade... The place was quite packed so waited a while for them to set up the tables... Actually was my first time eating at Crystal Jade, always wondered whats so nice abt that place that it appeals to teens like us... and i soon found out... personally i ordered a bowl roast duck and chicken congee... Quite nice, but certainly not like congee to me... rice water rather haha =). The others ordered a whole lot of dian xin on top of their main course.
Kezia and Pin Yun both wore rather stunned looks when the rest of us sprung on them with a birthday cake from the Crystal Jade Bakery... Haha =) you all should have looked at their faces... Never seen a face in real life as stunned as that... Chocolate Banana cake... Haha at first sounded like a weird combi but tasted quite nice actually...
After furious mathematical calculations from Abel in an effort to split the bill as evenly as possible, we left after David said "Keep the change" in chinese to the staff member attending to us, to roars of laughter all around. From there, kezia and xin hui left for some np meeting whilst we all went to check out the time slots for the movie. 4.45 pm movie it was for War of the Worlds so we had quite a lot of time for shopping... Think yvonne, yan ling and ikuyo left at that point... Haha clearly remember nana's face lighting up with a glint in her eyes at the prospect of shopping... so we split up into girls and guys groups to shop... Seriously us guys dun have anything in mind to shop... so after a brief while of wondering the Heeren and "coincidentally" meeting the girls again at the Heeren... After following them for one level us guys decided to disappear and dive into the basement of the Paragon to take a seat in Starbucks... From there it was free and easy for the guys... Abel reading his book on Egypt's history... me reading newspapers... Uncle, mong and david going off to look around... Returned to Cineleisure at 4.15 due to sheer boredom haha =)
War of the Worlds! A classic book i read when i was in primary 3 i think... comes on to the big screen as a Americanised, modernised, action packed, suspenseful thriller of Martians (so the book says though nt mentioned in the movie) planned invasion of Earth.
To better understand the film, the knowledge of the novel helped... Firstly i'll like to highlight some key differences between the novel and the film...
The novel was set in Britain when they were still using steamships, while the movie was set in modern day America. Also, the movie upgraded the martian's machinery as well as stylised them... They didnt have energy shields in the novel... also they had glass domes for cockpits in the novel, while those in the movie were fully shielded with armour...
My personal rating of the film is 3.5 stars. Great mixture of suspenseful music and thrilling scenes... Sure shocked at sometimes when the Martians appeared out of nowhere... like a scene where its silent and dun see anything except for Tom Cruise and a pool of water... Then suddenly a Martian machine leg drops from above and splashes into the pool... I remember jumping in my seat at that point... Haha =) David also had a particularly violent reaction at some point in the movie, letting out somewhat of a squeal that drew a bit of laughter from us... Filming technique also bolstered its suspenseful ambience... However, the plot was never really there and to non-readers of the novel, the ending was rather abrupt and needed some explanation from me... Hehe =)
Ok then... a rather eventful day huh? Extensive description from me... lolx... hope it didnt bore you dead... Haha =) My english not great, so cant appeal much to you all with my description... Yupz Cya around! =)
