right this post was supposed to be blogged at 12.30 am today but blogger was down then.. so i had to postpone it till now. anyway 黄城 rox! woo hoo! great acting by Qin Pei as the typical illiterate S'porean mom! haha of course cannt forget Pin Yun (lighting) and Eden, Yvonne and Axl (props i think)! great job everyone! im sure everyone who went yesterday and today all loved it! =D
hmmm i think i'll jus go thru the general outline of the plays. The first play was entitled "The 3.5th play" in chinese. a story of a girl who died in a car accident at 1996 who has to return to the mortal world to clear up excess psychological baggage in order to take a step towards being "promoted" to Heaven. Ok the characters. Dead girl. Bian Hao 1996, the person in charge of the "memory station". (haha seriously dunno how to type out the chinese so pls make do with the pathetic translation :S)He serves as a guide for the girl and provides periodic comic relief. Dead girl's sister, burdened with having to find lost younger brother and looking after her grandfather who is disillusioned, thinking the dead girl is still alive. Grandfather. Lost brother, in the charge of a "godmother". Godmother, the person banged into the dead girl, causing her death and at the same time abducting her brother to repay her guilt. rights with that said, basically it was a heartwarming tale of how she got them all to finally accept her death and let her go in peace.
next up is "9", featuring Qin Pei! well basically its a story of a single mother caught up in a cycle of poverty brought abt by having to take care of 3 children, as well as having married twice, with both being failed marriages. firstly the characters. Mother, very caring towards all 3 children, wants the best for all of them, but efforts limited by her tragic past. Elder daughter, 27 yrs old, daughter of 1st husband who ran away, studied in England, CEO of a company soon after graduation, resents her mother for letting her 2nd husband sexually assault her. Son, 18 yrs old, repeating ITE yr 1, son of 2nd husband, resents his mother too for doting on his elder sister and leaving nothing for him. Youngest daughter, 9 yrs old, does poorly at primary sch, repeating Pri 2, very innocent, daughter of a man who asked Mother to take care of her, with the man providing a sum of money as educational fees. yupz i loved this particular play becos it used the youngest daughter's innocence to pictorially show the twisted and tragic family background. she periodically tells a story using sheep and wolves to show what happened in the family's past (which only Mother knowing fully), tho i think she didn't know what she was doing perhaps. it is also significant tt the most innocent member of the family is actually the most forgiving and loving member, nt as calculating and presumptious as her sister and brother. ultimately Mother told all, saying tt the money for the Elder sister's education came frm the youngest daughter's education fees. the younger brother also realised tt the reason why the his elder sister was favoured was becos of his father's deeds.
yupz side points being tt there was a special appearance by Qin Pei's cousin as Younger brother years ago, becos there were flashbacks in the play as well! haha quite cute! :P as for the significance of the title of the play, u notice tt the ages of the children are separated by 9 yrs each, so each child brings abt another 9 yrs of suffering for Mother. also 9 sounds like "taking very long" in chinese so it shows the length of Mother's hardship. the director also came up with 9 words sounding like jiu and formed sentences out of them for the conclusion of the play. truly profound and professional. =D
alright finally the last play of the day! Entitled "I'll be waiting for you till someday" (urgh crude direct translation..) anyway its a film abt the business politics and rivalry between 2 companies who had their CEOs changed following the former CEOs' deaths. Taking control of the respective companies are the son and daughter of these 2 former CEOs. well i cant say i fully understand this play, due to the complex and hard to understand use of symbolism. well basically its abt this 2 companies vying for market share. a story of conflict between 2 companies, as well as conflict between their CEOs and their respective general managers. ultimately 1 company gets a crucial deal tt leads to the downfall of the other, mainly due to the GM backstabbing her CEO by leaking company secrets to the other company. well as for symbolism, the only one i understand is perhaps tt the whole play was acted out while standing on a chinese chess board, signifying war and conflict.
phew im totally out of breath now after rattling on and on non stop. anyway after the whole event, we (srs and some jrs) went to congratulate Pin Yun, Qin Pei and Eden for a job well done! *applause applause* =) well Axl and Yvonne had alr disappeared so couldnt congratulate them. yupz after tt we walked towards the Singapore River and took in the night view b4 the we spilt up, some to eat, others (me, hh, kel, yuan shan, joseph and nana) went home.
yupz tt concludes this EXTENSIVE and BREATHTAKING (*urgh cant breathe) coverage of 黄城夜韵 2006! hope i sounded ok and you all understood what i wrote! =P once again apologies for the poor english translations! :S signing off..
OH almost forgot. It maybe kinda late but oh well. To sam and nana, have a nice taiwan trip!! =D
