Yozz 7B! Once again the Sports Reporter descents upon Toa Payoh Sports Hall to witness the Crowning of HC as Judo 'A' and 'C' Division Champs!!! Whoo hoo!!! Home to the Basketball and Netball Finals this year, I had a particular familiarity about Toa Payoh Sports Hall. Three proves to be a lucky number apparently... haha =)
In order to capture the flavour of the Japanese martial art, Ive endeavoured to do some of my own research (mainly from the Judo notice board lolx) to better understand the proceedings of the match. I shall present it here for you all, so as to allow you all to better understand what you just saw.
Kodokan Judo, founded by Jigoro Kano in 1882, is a Japanese martial art that involves throwing, holding, choking and armlocking your opponents. Apparently, however, choking was banned from the Nationals. Anyway, the aim of the martial art is to score an ippon or full point. There are different levels of scoring, ippon being the best, followed by waza-ari, then yuko and finally koka. Once an ippon has been scored, the match is over.
Ippon can be scored by either throwing an opponent onto his back with considerable force or speed, or by holding your opponent to the ground for 25 seconds.
Waza-ari is scored by either throwing an opponent partially onto his back with force, or by holding your opponent to the ground for 20 seconds.
Yuko is scored when 2 elements required for ippon is missing (like the opponent is not thrown onto his back and without considerable force), or by holding your opponent to the ground for 15 seconds.
Koka is scored when almost all elements required for ippon is missing, with the opponent landing slightly on his side with little force involved. Holding your opponent to the ground for 10 seconds also scores a koka.
To the call of hajime (start), the match begins and runs for 3 mins the most. In between, calls of matte (wait) and sokomama (freeze) calls the exponents to stop for a while. Osaekomi is announced when a hold is considered to begin. The match is considered over when either exponent scores an ippon, with the referree announcing "ippon, soremade". Should the time limit run out, the exponent that has managed to score the highest grade of point wins. For eg, an exponent with 1 waza-ari and 1 koka wins at the expense of an exponent with 3 yukos and 3 kokas.
During the course of the match, hansoke make (serious penalty) or shido (minor penalty) may be called. Hansoke make warrants a disqualification, whilst shido instantly gives a koka to the opponent, the score increasing with each shido.
OK! With a thorough understanding of Judo now, we can get on with the match! Haha hope it has been insightful so far... Well first up was the HC Girls Judo Team! We raced to victory, capturing 3 straight ippons over CJC, with the 1st performing a successful throw, followed by a successful hold of 25s by the next exponent and followed by a laser quick throw after 8 seconds by the 3rd exponent. We won comfortably 4-1 or 5-0 for that match.
The much anticipated match of the day was the Guys Judo Team Final between HC and CJC. Having upset RJC enroute to the Finals, CJC was one tough nut to crack. However, Huang Hao started the final with gusto by clocking the fastest win for the guys team. An ippon scored by throwing his opponent on the 4th try after being called back to the starting line for 3 times. Simply astounding! =) HC picked up the next point after good work by the next exponent by holding his CJ exponent to the ground for 25 secs.
However, CJ pulled one back after their third exponent threw his opponent albeit a bit unsteadily... certainly didnt look like an ippon to me, with the HC guy thrown down on to the ground rather awkwardly on his side... But the referree thought otherwise so 1-2 to CJ... Small matter as HC goes on to capture the next 2 points to win comfortably 4-1, with Hindarto (something like tt) claiming a dramatic point for HC with a last second ippon by throwing his opponent full onto his back.
Yupz with that HC claims the 'A' Division Guys and Girls Judo Double!!! Yayz! Congratulations to HH, great performance! =) Cls Bdae Tml! Cya then...
